In his or her first session, your child has been given a “speech folder”, which he or she should bring to EVERY speech session. In here you will find a speech day schedule and a sticker reward sheet. These two papers should stay in your child’s folder at all times! Sometimes schedules change as we proceed through the year, and those changes will be noted on your child’s schedule sheet.
** We will be following the “10 day” rotation schedule that the students’ homeroom specials schedules follow for Speech as well. So your child’s speech schedule will say “Day _ and Day _” rather than a day of the week. My suggestion to make remembering this easier is to remember what Special class or classes (ex: Art, Music, Gym, etc) your child has on Speech days and associate those in order to know which day your child will be having speech. This new scheduling procedure will hopefully reduce the number of missed sessions due to weather cancellations, holidays, etc. and allow us to maintain consistency with the school rotation schedules.
As we get started, I will begin sending “Speech Homework” in your child’s folder. Speech Homework is used to promote carryover and practice of the skills that we work on in Speech class. It is extremely important that your child has your help, support and encouragement at home to complete these home practice activities! Without your help at home it will take your child much longer to correct his or her speech and language skills! These activities should take no more than a few minutes of your time. I also ask parents or caregivers to sign speech homework pages once they are completed, as usually this is the only way for me to know for sure that your child practiced the assignment. Please also feel free to jot a note on the homework if your child does well OR if they have difficulty with any part of the assignment. This helps me to know what to focus on the following session. I also ask that all speech papers remain in your child’s speech folder, especially their sticker reward sheet and most recent homework papers. Sometimes we need to go back and review previous work as a warm up, and these papers really help.
